Who: Rafe and Holiday
What: Shopping for clothes post lift from Abysus and a few exams later.

When: A week after arriving at Providence
Where: Providence HQ/Holiday's Car/Shopping!

Rafe sat, arms wrapped around himself in his room. All things considered, there wasn't much of his in this room. It was all white and sterile. It was more like a hospital than a young boy's room. Still, this was his assigned living quarters for the next well...until they figured out what to do with him.
He sighed, blue eyes looking over the door that connected his room to his mother's apartment. His mother wasn't there of course, he was still in intensive care where he needed to be. Getting better slowly, but surely. It gave Rafe a lot of time to himself.

He smiled. He liked her laugh. It was friendly, like her.

He turned and noticed a small candle burning in a red glass holder. He raised an eyebrow and daintily tapped the glass with a finger.

She smiled and raised her own eyebrow at whatever it was he was doing. For now, she was going to watch and see what he did with the candle.

When the glass wasn't hot, he tentatively touched it with several fingers before pulling it across the table and setting it in front of himself. He held a finger over the top an snatched it back almost instantly. Yeah. That was pretty warm. Not sure about that one.

He touched the side again and it was warm. The tiny flame within flickered from orange to blue and back again almost hypnotically.

His mind is suddenly somewhere else...some when else. It was back in Abysus. He was much smaller and it was dark. The power was out. He felt tiny blips of surprise from the EVOs in the castle as they noticed. He sat still in the darkness, not wanting to walk into a wall or worse, one of his older half siblings. He pulled his knees up to his chin and blue eyes stared out at nothing. Suddenly, a tiny flickering light appeared in the doorway. Along with it came a flood of protectiveness and a slight tinge of anxiety. Biowulf was holding a small candle carefully in the palm of his hand. He eased it down to the ground where Rafe was sitting before laying down beside his pup with his arms and legs tucked under himself. Rafe seized tufts of his father's mane in his tiny hands and buried his face in the warm fur there.

"Can I get you anything to drink"?

A strange voice brought him back to the present and Rafe blinked dumbly and looked towards the source of the voice. It was a stranger holding a pen and a pad. He looked back and forth from her to Holiday before answering quietly.

"A water would be fine, please."

"I'll have tea, thanks," Holiday told the server.

The woman walked off with her order and Holiday turned curiously back to Rafe. "What were you thinking about so hard there?"

Rafe pushed the candle back to its original place.

"My Dad."

When the small team had pulled Six and Rafe out, the EVO had let them. He'd showed them how. He'd taken a hit to sell it as an attack. A bad hit, but he'd been willing to do it for them.

"... You don't mean Six..." And she knows he doesn't mean Kleiss. It must be Biowulf...

She's not sure if they should talk about that now, though, but... she's more than willing...

Rafe shook his head. No. Six was Mum. Biowulf was Dad. He was the only one of his half siblings who even knew who their father actually was. His made a point to bond with him.

"He...he said I had options he didn't have. I didn't get what that meant until now. I'm not used to seeing people like me and you everywhere. It's...different."

He's an EVO, he knows, but he doesn't look like one. He took a lot of flak for that back in Abysus. His father had always been able to silence the unruly hecklers with a glance if he overheard them.

She didn't care for hearing things like that... Despite them being true.

"... I know that Van Kleiss always had ulterior motives, but he did have a point. The line between humans and EVOs is... pretty strong... I mean, there's no law permitting a separation between the two but..." Holiday looks out at the rest of the restaurant, seeing only normal looking people as if the Nanite Event had never happened. "I guess, society tends to make those laws, sometimes... It's not right."

Rafe shook his head.

"No. It isn't. They feel the same, most of the time. To me, anyway"

Rafe paused, not wanting to dwell on negativity.

"Mum says...Mum says you have a sister. Is she nice like you?"

It appears an awkward subject change is in order on his part.

She doesn't mind the change of subject. She smiles to him.

"Yes, I think so. She's younger than me, though. About Rex's age. She was once an EVO, too."

"Was? Did Rex cure her? What was her dazzle?"

He stared up at her with wide, blue eyes.

"Um..." Well, um, this is uh-

"She... didn't really have any control of her abilities. She... had a different form and had lost her... sense of self." Just trying to figure out the right words to sugar coat it all. "Rex wasn't able to cure her. Someone had made a kind of machine that cured her half way. Six allowed for it to fully cure her, though. I've been trying to figure out how to replicate it since, but... it hasn't gotten too far."

Six's disappearance put a huge drawback on that research.

Rafe frowned.

"Oh. I'm sorry it had to be like that for her. I know things don't always turn out well with nanites. I'm glad Mum was able to help her get back to the way she was supposed to be. Broken packs aren't good."

"It's alright now." But... no. Broken packs weren't good. She still hated herself for those years, but... there was no place for that right now. Not with his kind of powers.

"I'm grateful to Six for what he did for her. He almost lost his life right there... But we're all okay now."

Rafe opened his mouth to say something, but he stopped because the waitress was back with their drinks.

The waitress placed of their drinks down and when the woman asked for their order, Holiday gladly gave it to her.

It wasn't long and the woman was away again.

Rafe's eyes never left the two women as they talked. He watched their mannerisms, their actions, everything. He needed to see how things worked here. This was his world now. He was a part of it. He didn't want to look like some noob.

But...but he'd just played with a candle. Did kids do that? Did anyone do that?

He shook his head.

"Doctor Holiday? What all do I need? I mean, like, for clothes and my room and stuff."

She shrugged to him.

"Whatever you want. I want things to be comfortable for you and help remind you of home, if you want that. Being issued clothes and having to sleep in a sterile black and white environment would drive anyone nuts after awhile."

Rafe mulled the idea over in his head.

"Okay. So...I guess we'll see when we get there. What kinds of stores will we go to?"

"Well..." She gave that one a little thought first.

"We can always go by the mall and do some window shopping. See what kind of stuff you like and don't like and buy some things there. If we want some more after that little adventure, then we can just base the other stores from the ones we went in there."

AHA! Science, sort of!

"So...we'll go exploring. I like that. Dad would...sometimes take me exploring around...Abysus."

He mentally face palmed at that. Normal people didn't want to hear about his weird EVO upbringing. Well, Holiday might, she was a scientist, but but but...still.

"Really?"

Well, Holiday isn't exactly normal, anyway. She wouldn't mind hearing about some good things he did while in Abysus. Just the thought of him being that close to Kleiss terrifies her, but she knows that there had to be some good moments. He's had to have had a good life so far.

"What did you do out there?"

Rafe was glad he could be open with her.

He could sense her enthusiasm and curiosity.

He liked her a lot.

"Dad showed me all kinds of neat things. There's a hot springs in the mountains, you know? He found it. He'd take me there sometimes. He showed me all the safe caves and taught me which wild EVOs were friendly and which ones to leave alone. He told me stories about the stars and what they mean. Taught me how to climb trees and catch fish and all kinds of cool stuff like that. He always said having the right knowledge was sometimes more important than being the strongest."

Rafe, obviously, was not the strongest EVO in Abysus.

"He's right," she nodded, "That's how I got where I am. Being the strongest doesn't always mean you're going to be the best." Or the one that survives.

He smiles at her, it is nice to hear his father's opinions validated by someone who, well, isn't his mother.

"Mum says there are different ways to be strong. He says you're the strongest woman he knows. I used to think that meant you were a super hero or something."
